03 Dec Gel Nails

The internet is full on tutorials on various DIY projects including manicures. However, not all of these tutorials are easy to understand. Some are too professionals while other lack information. Furthermore, most online tutorials lack personal reviews, advice and tips. There are certain things which you need to understand before committing to this type of manicure as well as certain tips which you can use in order for the nails to look better. Gel manicure can easily be done at home if you have the right supplies and the right instructions. Today we are going to give you a few professional tips on how to do gel nails at home.

  • Know what a gel manicure requires

The first thing you need to know is that the gel manicure requires some rather professional equipment. You don’t need a license in order to buy these products but you won’t find them in the supermarket either. There are several beauty shops where you can buy gel nail kits but it is better if you make your purchase online as you can read reviews about each type of product. In time, you will experiment with several products but for starters you just need a basic kit which will cost at least $125. Don’t be tricked into buying extremely cheap products because they will be a complete waste of money. Another thing which you need to understand is that gel nails cannot be rushed. A gel manicure usually requires about an hour of your time and if you are not a meticulous person or you get bored easily, you are better off getting your nails done at a saloon.

  • Gel manicure set

In order to learn how to do gel nails at home, you need to get a gel nails set. You also need an UV light or a LED lamp. It is better to acquire a Led lamp because it is less harmful to your hands and it takes less time for the gel to harden. The nail kit should contain a Foundation gel, which acts as a base coat, colored gel and Gel Top It Off, which works as a top coat. You also need either Gelish Cleanser or 99% Isopropyl Alcohol or Cleanser. In the future, if you plan on using your nail kit in order to do other people’s manicure, it is safer to use the Gellish Cleaner which is more sanitizing. If you are using a UV lamp, you will also need to use sun screen on your hands. You should also have lint free nail wipes, a cuticle pusher, a zebra file, a nail buffer, cuticle oil and an orange wood stick.

  • Tutorial

In order to learn how to do gel nails at home, you only need to follow some simple instructions. Start by preparing your nails for a normal manicure. Trim the nails and take care of the cuticles. Put the cuticle oil on the cuticles as well as on the skin around the nail. After you push the cuticles use a buffer to buff the nails until you eliminate their natural shine. Next cleanse the nails with a lint free wipe soaked in alcohol. Cleanse only the nail and not the skin and the cuticles. Use a cotton bud to clean at the base of the nail without cleaning the cuticles. This way, if you apply gel on the skin around the nail, it will be easier to clean since it will be oily. Once you start the cosmetic procedure you cannot take any breaks until you finish it. Start by applying a very thin layer of gellish foundation on each nail and then apply several other thin layers until you have a thick and uniform coat. This procedure is very tricky around the cuticles as you need to apply the foundation as closely as possible to them without actually touching them. If you touch the cuticles, the gel will eventually peel off. When you are done, put your fingers under the lamp in order for the foundation to harden. It should take about 45 seconds. Next, apply the nail polish gel in very thin layers and allow each layer to dry individually. Usually a gel manicure requires 2-3 layers, depending on the quality of the products. At last, apply the finishing coat and cure for 45 seconds. When you are done, your nails will have a tacky layer which you must remove with the alcohol soaked wipe, when the nails are completely cured.

The curing time can depend according to the lamp and products you use so read the instructions of your products carefully. An important tip which you should remember is the order in which you do your nails. Start with the fingers from one hand. When they are completely done, do the four fingers from your other hand and do your thumbs last. Furthermore, with the risk of repeating ourselves, we must remind you that in order for the gel to be even and have a natural appearance, you must apply it in very thin layers.
