How to Apply Gel Nail Extensions

20 Nov Gel Nails

Whether you are having troubles growing your nails long or you simple want a long lasting manicure, then you should definitely consider gel nail extensions. The great thing about gel nails is that although they require a lot of hard work, you can do them yourself, in the privacy of your home. However, in order to do this you need some professional supplies which you can order over the internet as well as a solid set of instructions.

  • Supplies

Unlike other do it yourself projects, the gel manicure cannot be improvised with whatever you can find at home. You need a professional kit which should include: UV nail gel, UV drying lamp, nail primer, nail brushes, nail file, nail buffer, nail tips, cuticle pusher, q tips and cuticle oil. Although this element is optional we also advise you to buy an electrical nail file. Nail tip extensions are very rigid and they can be very hard to shape. When you order them, they come in a very big size in order to be fitted for various nail sizes. The electrical nail will make the shaping process a lot easier.

  • Prepare your nails

The first thing that you need to do is remove all traces of old nail polish. Once you do that you need to trim your nails and take care of your cuticles. Apply cuticle oil and use a wooden stick in order to push back the cuticles. The next step can be rather unpleasant as you need to consistently buff your nails until you remove the natural shine. This may seem like an unnatural procedure but it will ensure a better adherence of the gel to the nails. Last, you need to apply the primer in order to remove remaining moisture from the nails. Allow enough time for the primer to dry before proceeding to the next step.

  • Applying the gel nail extensions

There are twp ways of extending your nails: by using only gel or by using plastic tips. With plastic tips, the first thing that you need to do is find the right size of tips and adjust their length. Be careful when trimming the tips because if they are poor quality, they may crack. Some people adjust the length of the tips after gluing them to the nail but it can be easier to do it before applying them. Apply glue on the inside of the tips and position them on the nails. Don’t wait to much before gluing them in order to avoid air bubbles. If you don’t apply the tips perfectly from the first attempt, you can use nail polish remover in order to dissolve the glue and try again. At this point you should do a little buffering so that there isn’t too much of a difference between the thickness of your natural nail and the tips. Gently buffer the tips until they look almost like part of your nail. Next you need to apply the UV gel on top and place the nails under the UV light. You can do 2-3 layers of gel in order to fix any possible gaps. You can also use gel nail extensions without using tips but you need nail forms. Nail forms extensions are done faster since you don’t have to do a lot of trimming. Furthermore, you also avoid putting glue on your nails. The nail forms are conical shaped stickers which you attach to your finger and beneath your natural nail tips. You then apply gen on the nail and on the forms in order to prologue the length of your nails. As you can see, nail extensions are not so complicated. The great thing about a gel manicure is that it lasts longer and you can experiment with sophisticated nail designs.
